33: Callout 11th November 2011
- TYPE – Lost walker
- LOCATION – Kinder Plateau
- TEAM MEMBERS – 26 plus GMRT and BMRT plus SARDA
- DURATION – 3 hrs or 78 man hours
We were asked to search for a walker who had become lost in the mist on Kinder Plateau. He knew he had been to Kinder Low trig point and then decided to turn back south towards Jacobs Ladder and Edale. However, in the thick mist he had become disorientated – though he knew he was close to a waterfall. We put search parties up onto the plateau in his last known position but also covered the whole of the edge path, focusing on known water fall positions. The visibility as a result of the mist, rain and darkness was extremely poor so it was with great relief that the chap was located near Kinder Downfall, well north of his last position.
Now that the weather is worsening and the hours of daylight are shortening, it is essential that anyone going out walking in the hills carries the appropriate kit – map, compass, torch, whistle and spare warm clothing. Also make sure that someone knows where you are going; and if the weather is bad, don’t feel bad about coming down or not going out at all.
