• Type –Injured walker
• Locations – Pagoda rocks, southern edges of Kinder
• Team members –34 KMRT
• Duration 3 1/2 hrs or 109 man hours
During our monthly Sunday exercise, which today was split between providing cover for one of the local fell races whilst at the same time running a probationer training session and a casualty care exam for 11 of our team, we were asked to assist a walker who had a lower leg injury. Those on the hill were quickly diverted to the location where the casualty was given suitable pain relief before being stretchered off to our team LandRover where they were then taken down to a waiting ambulance. As an aside, all those taking the exam passed so well done to them.

• Type – Civil Emergency situation, assisting motorists stranded by snow fall
• Locations – A515 Buxton, A6 Taddington and B5155 Bakewell/Monyash
• Team members –11 KMRT, also BMRT and EMRT
• Duration 5 hrs or 55 man hours
We were asked to assist in the location and evacuation of motorists trapped on the A515 out of Buxton following severe snow fall and strong winds that produced blizzard like conditions. Motorists had been stuck since early that morning in the drifting snow as members of several MRT’s worked alongside the Police and Local Authority to reach them. During our deployment, Mobile 2 was retasked by the Police to Taddington to assist dig-out a Doctor who urgently needed to get to work in Chesterfield. Mobile 2 then found large numbers of stranded trucks and cars along the A6 around Taddington and then the B5155 Monyash Rd was found blocked with stranded vehicles too.

In addition, we had requested assistance from a Helimed aircraft. Fortunately one was available and arrived at the cas site to evacuate the casualty, who was being treated by our team, the EMAS paramedic and a passing doctor.

• Duration 2 hrs or 50 man hours
We were asked to assist a couple who were concerned about getting down before darkness fell. I spoke to them via mobile phone and was given a description of where they were, along with a Lat and Long position fix from their phone – a new one to me. Quickly using an app on my phone, I was able to convert this into an OSGB grid reference which tied in with where I thought they were. A party was sent up and quickly located them before bringing them down to base. A quick and successful conclusion.

• Type – Ambulance assist / difficult access
• Location – Marple
• Team members –25 KMRT alongside NWAS Ambulance and HART personnel
• Duration 3hrs or 75 man hours
We were asked to assist an ambulance crew access a boy who had fallen down a steep slope which they could not access. Upon arrival, the steep slope was a 10m vertical crag with another 10m run out slope. The boy was half way down and despite the best efforts of the HART team was proving difficult to access. We were soon able to locate access down to him with the assistance of locals were he was stabilised by the paramedics. We were then able to come down to him with a stretcher via our rope team who loaded him then brought him down to the bottom of the slope. A very muddy and slippery carry then took place to get him back up to the waiting ambulance. A superb effort and great co-operation between all the services involved to get the job done.

Alerted by the duty controller to a lady with a dislocated knee on the Western edge path of Kinder Scout.
Initially there was some confusion as to their location due to the verbal description of their position not matching the map reference given. The injured ladies companion was contacted by mobile phone and an accurate grid reference obtained.
Due to the conditions under foot it was apparent that a long stretcher carry off would be required, and that extracting the casualty by helicopter would be a preferable. A helicopter air ambulance was requested.
Team members proceeded to the incident site and after the casualty was flown to hospital, escorted the remainder of the party safely down to our base.
Many thanks to the North West Air Ambulance from Manchester for their assistance

- Duration – 45 minutes or 20.25 man hours
I was contacted by the Duty Controller to look for a lone walker who was overdue back to his accommodation. The man had reported earlier to his wife that he had hurt his knee but then communications were lost when his phone battery went dead. There was concern for the man as it was forecast to be bitterly cold overnight. We were just putting together a search plan that included our team, Buxton MRT and SARDA dogs when a report came in that he had turned up, much to the relief of everyone.
