Cracken Edge Fell Race 7 August 7:30pm 2013

This year’s Cracken Edge Fell Race takes place next Wednesday 7 August.  The course takes in 7 miles across Cracken Edge with tremendous views of Kinder. This fell race is run by Kinder Mountain Rescue Team. Entries are £4 and every penny goes to KMRT. The Cracken Edge Fell Race is a medium counter in the Hayfield Challenge. Visit Hayfield Fell Races for more information. Its held in the evening and starts at 7:30pm. Registration is at our base in Hayfield.

**Update Tuesday 6 August - Looks like its going to be a muddy Cracken Edge Fell Race this Wednesday. However the weather is now looking much better. Latest weather forecast for tomorrow night’s race from the Met Office http://bit.ly/1cHhDuF – mostly dry but will still be wet underfoot. One of the team who ran the race route on the weekend reported it to be very wet in places but bone dry in others and we’ve had rain since then. Because of the wet and muddy nature of the course with flowing but tricky descents everyone must wear appropriate fell and trail shoes – not flat-soled trainers. If you turn up in footwear deemed inappropriate by either the race organiser or Kinder Mountain Rescue Team, you won’t get to run. . The Cracken Edge Fell Race is run according to FRA rules so competitors will want to familiarise themselves with the equipment section of the FRA safety requirements for fell races (available here).  Find out more on our Cracken Edge 2013 page and information for competitors

CRACKEN EDGE est 1995 -FELL RACE REPORT 2011 – photos coming soon!

Once a year Kinder Mountain Rescue Team’s base in Hayfield is swarmed by fell runners registering and getting ready for the Cracken Edge Fell Race. This year was no exception as nearly 200 runners turned up last Wednesday to run and raise funds for the team’s emergency rescue vehicle appeal.

Whilst some might have been enjoying the sweltering heat, the runners were all probably hoping for a light breeze. The Cracken Edge, one of the toughest mid-week races in the Fell Runner’s Calendar was held on Wednesday 3 August 2011. This race, one of the seven which make up the prestigious Hayfield Championship series, has been going since 1995. The record for the race stands at an amazing 40.14, set by international runner Steve Vernon in 2008. read more…

9 – Call out / Fell Race Cover Sunday 10th April 2011

Whilst providing cover on the hill for one of the local fell races, we were doing some casualty care scenarios at Kinder Low Trig Point when a group of 3 people approached asking for assistance. The female member of the party had hurt her leg earlier in the walk. We provided some pain relief and then were able to escort her to the track where we could evacuate her off the hill by Land Rover. As this was going on, word reached us that one of the fell runners was unaccounted for. We were just starting to recall other parties and plan a sweep of the plateau when the missing runner turned up at race control.

The glorious weather resulted in many red faces at the debrief and a note to self to buy some sun tan cream, perhaps the British spring has actually arrived!

Cracken Edge Fell Race – KMRT wins team trophy

The Cracken Edge fell race was held last night. A little wet in places but a glorious, warm summer’s evening more than made up for that. Although it seemed like half of Kinder were running, there were really only five of us and Darren, Dan and Mat brought home the trophy and a bottle of beer each. The rest of  the team, families and friends were marshalling. The lovely thing about this race is that its a true team event, run by the team to raise funds for the work we do so thanks to each and every runner for taking part and to all the friends, families and supporters who contribute to making this the success it is.

Richard Siepp was taking photographs at the race and these are available from here. Rich has very generously offered to donate the proceds of any photo sales to the team so if you do buy one, you’re not only getting a cracking (no pun intended) memento but also supporting KMRT.

Apologies for the delay in uploading the Cracken Edge Fell Race photos – these will hopefully be up in the next few days

Callout 2. 7-March-2009

In an attempt to do a bit of training for the downfall race I went for a run round the route on Saturday morning, a time when the plateau is often quite, while people are busy shopping or assembling Ikea furniture. However the Watershed race (42miles overnight) was in progress and there were runners everywhere. When I reached the downfall I bumped into a friend from my student days who was leading a “blind” runner, which at first I took to be some sort of charity stunt. It turned out however that his sight had gone during the event and could not see enough to walk without assistance. The offer of a lift from Edale Cross was gratefully accepted and the snatch callout procedure swung into action as we guided him along the edge path.

Once in the vehicle his sight started to improve and continued to do so back at the hut. He was then driven back round to Edale to be united with his fellow runners.
